Intro

The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) is investigating a possible ban on placing polymeric infill onto the market. They deem a ban necessary to prevent environmental pollution from microplastics.

While ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) has finalised its opinion, the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC) is still undecisive.

SEAC will use the current public consultation window to find answers to a few short questions. This public consultation window will close on 1 September.

As ESTC will submit a response on behalf of the industry, we hereby invite you to submit your answers to these questions. This will allow ESTC drafting a comprehensive response that will allow SEAC to take an informed decision.

  • There will be enough alternative synthetic turf systems available that meet relevant performance standards by the end of the proposed six-year transitional period.
  • In case you disagree; why do you disagree? Is there evidence to support your opinion (SEAC is requesting data to support opinions). How long will the industry need to deliver?
  • How many pitches would need to be replaced before the end of their expected lifetime and what would the impacts of such a replacement be?
  • How long will it take before a pitch with your product(s) would cease to provide suitable performance if infill levels cannot be topped up?
  • Is there evidence to suggest that indoor artificial pitches should be treated differently from outdoor pitches? Please provide supporting evidence.
  • Only 10-20% of pitches would need to be replaced prematurely in case polymeric infill will no longer be available.
  • The socio-economic impact will be limited and will be mitigated by the transition period.
  • If you disagree why and what number do you think is more appropriate?
  • The average cost of containment is considered to be 30,000 €
  • If you disagree, what do you estimate the cost of retro-fitting of containment measures will be and how does this compare to fitting to new build fields?
  • Do you have proof to substantiate your input? If so, please mail it to alastair@estc.info
  • Please submit your contact details in case there is a need to follow up with you.
