Synthetic turf in Germany

Even though synthetic turf did not yet reach first tier competition matches in German football it is quite popular throughout the nation. A couple of clubs in the German Oberliga play regularly on synthetic turf including VfB Leimen and FC Hertha Wiesbach. Also for community sports synthetic turf is chosen, for example for the Westsachsen Stadium in Zwickau.

In the first and second tier synthetic turf is at least regularly used for training sessions. Since 2005 the German Bundesligist Borussia Monchengladbach trains on a synthetic pitch. The FIFA Certification 2 Star has been achieved regularly since then. The club appreciates the outstanding conditions for training for national and international matches. After more than 8 years the club is still satisfied with its pitch and the consistently high quality.

Borussia Monchengladbach is not the only top club that at least trains on synthetic turf. In 2006 Borussia Dortmund got a synthetic pitch for its training centre and even Bayern Munich trains on synthetic turf. Other German football clubs that own a synthetic training pitch include FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
