ProPlay base on first artificial ski slope in Turkey

Recently, the official opening of the very first ‘all seasons’ artificial ski slope in Turkey took place. This ski project is situated in a new ski resort in the city of Gaziantep. Especially for this project, Schmitz Foam Products developed the high-quality ProPlay-Ski shock pad.

Prisme Events has worked in collaboration with the team from the city of Gaziantep to bring life to this huge 10,000 m² (107,640 sqft) ski project in total. The ski slopes, situated at an altitude of 800 meter, will be operational all the year round without any snow-blower or cold energy, thanks to the AstroTurf Snow Sports Surface.

The Erikse Gaziantep resort includes 2 expert slopes of 200 m and 240 m long with 3 different levels of difficulty. It also includes a ski school of 800 m², a beginners slope and a tubing area. On site, there is also a rope course as well as an artificial lake and all necessary amenities such as changing rooms, panoramic restaurant and bar.

New Union Jack for London

Polytan|STI installs specially designed hockey pitch

In East London May 2014 is certainly going to be a time for new beginnings, because that’s when the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is due to open at the Eton Manor leisure facility, an exclusive training venue for professional and recreational athletes. With four indoor courts and a large outdoor facility boasting two hockey pitches and two tennis courts, the centre will be a new attraction for the London hockey and tennis community. In partnership with the British construction firm Spadeoak, Polytan|STI is ensuring that the hockey pitches are up to the appropriate standards, with the developers of the Lee Valley Centre having opted for the Polytan|STI Poligras Olympia multipurpose turf.

The Eton Manor leisure club was established by four Old Etonians back at the start of the 20th century. The trust ceased its activities in 1967, however, and the facility then fell into disuse. It was not until the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London that the old sports venue returned to the public eye. The ground was used as a training facility and, later on, as the venue for wheelchair tennis at the Paralympics.

The designers came up with something really special for the new hockey pitches at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Polytan|STI laid the turf in London Blue and used areas of red and white around the edge to hint at the Union Jack. The installation of a multi-coloured turf system was a challenge, but the Polytan|STI team took the usual meticulous care to ensure that this unique project was implemented. The hockey pitch is thus a real eye-catcher. Thanks to its texurised monofilament grass surface, the Poligras Olympia hockey turf is conducive to really fast play with precise ball rolling behaviour. The latest generation of yarns means that the hockey pitch is still pleasantly soft, thus providing even greater protection and comfort for the players. That makes the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre ideally equipped for future competitions.

Former ‘Tennenplatz’ transforms into modern artificial grass field

Former ‘Tennenplatz’ called “Neustädter-Schleifscheibe”, recently transformed into a modern artificial grass field. Because ProPlay-Sport23D was applied in the design, an affordable and high-quality execution was possible.

Peter Näther, Object Manager SSV Neustadt/ Sa.: “We are very enthusiastic about the optimal playing characteristics. The players love this field because of its excellent sporttechnical characteristics. Even after heavy rainshowers the field is immediately playable. The drainage system functiones great!”

Field number 5 of the FC Barcelona's Sports City Complex

New FIFA 2 Star certification for one of FC Barcelona’s FieldTurf fields

Barcelona’s Sports City has been certified by FIFA with its highest quality distinctive: FIFA 2 Star.

The field, with more than 8,000m2, was installed in 2013 after removing the old turf (also produced by FieldTurf in 2002), levelling the sub-base and placing the most advanced system in the market: FieldTurf Optimum 63 Patented.

The leading product of the synthetic turf market, with 63mm height, has been installed on a natural base, with sewn seams and a patented mixture of silica sand and cryogenic rubber infill. This unparalleled system, the same one that has been installed in the other three FieldTurf fields of FC Barcelona’s Sports City, has overcome the requirements of the highest global football regulator agent, FIFA.

With this quality mark, FIFA guarantees that FC Barcelona’s new field offers the optimum biomechanical performance criteria, such as vertical ball rebound, ball roll, shock absorption, deformation, and rotational resistance. Moreover, the tests confirm that the surface ensures the maximum safety for players, by reducing the risk of injuries.

This is one of the four synthetic turf fields installed by FieldTurf in FC Barcelona’s Sports City complex (Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper) as Official Sports Surfaces Supplier of the Club. Two of them, more than 19,000m2, were installed in 2012. The other two fields installed in 2013, including this last F-11 field certified by FIFA, exceeding 12,500m2. Therefore, we’re talking about nearly 32,000m2 of FieldTurf’s highest performance synthetic turf installed in the Club’s training center. Add to this the VIP maintenance that FieldTurf is regularly applying on these fields, it can be assumed that this important project is positioned in the global elite of sports synthetic turf surfaces.

Dow Introduces New ENFORCER Sport System for Artificial Turf

Low temperature catalyzed system enables energy savings and improved turf durability

Horgen, SWITZERLAND – February 18, 2014 – Dow’s new ENFORCER™ Sport polyurethane backing system enables turf producers to increase yarn yield and consume less energy during production, while maintaining line speed and productivity. Turf field owners benefit from the
system with less thermal stress resulting in an improvement of yarn durability.
Tufters utilizing the new system can process polyurethane on existing equipment with minimal modifications and the innovative technology allows for easy implementation. Stop by Dow’s booth at the AMI Grass Yarn & Tufters Forum 2014 in Barcelona to learn how this new system can benefit you.

Lower Processing Temperatures – Improved Yields

While conventional coatings require processing temperatures of up to 150 °C for
curing, the new polyurethane system can be cured at temperatures of 85 -100 °C, depending on oven efficiency. The typical properties of polyurethane backing such as excellent tuft lock and increased stiffness will be further improved.

Standard coating materials require the yarn to be tufted longer than the final specification due to shrinkage caused by high processing temperatures. The yarn length may vary, resulting in  reduced turf performance. Running cooler with the new low temperature catalyzed system will help improve yarn yield, reduce yarn tips and prolong turf life.

Benefits of Polyurethanes

Compared to conventional backings, polyurethanes offer several production and end-product
advantages. The process is run solvent-free, i.e. no water or solvents are used to evaporate, allowing for faster line speeds than other coating materials, and less make-up air is required to cure, leading to energy savings.

In addition, the polyurethane system can be tailored to the existing production process, enabling strong tuft lock while at the same time retaining tuft lock properties when wet, due to the hydrophobic nature of polyurethane coatings. During installation, polyurethane backings provide excellent bond to the polyurethane seam adhesives, enabling longer durability.

Dow has a proven track record of offering an innovative portfolio of high-quality resins and technologies for artificial turf system components. From polymer yarn, to elastomeric granules, backing technologies, binders and adhesives, Dow solutions are custom-made to enable sports professionals to create tailor-made surfaces that meet the specific requirements of their respective disciplines.

Learn more about Dow’s new polyurethane system for artificial turf at the ‘Advances in Polyurethane & Its Synergy with the Turf Yarn’ presentation, by Dr. Barbara Bonavoglia, application technology leader at Dow, and Mr. Miguel Uriarte Hernandez, business development leader at Dow, on February 19, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at The Grass Yarn & Tufters Forum 2014 in Barcelona. Fun and games on the rooftops of Berlin

Polytan lays soft-impact surfaces for Spandau childcare centre

The kindergartens and crèches run by Klax represent a concept of education that believes in giving children a stimulating environment and encouraging their creativity. In keeping with this approach, in June and July of this year Polytan installed an unusual playground at the Klax “Karlsson vom Dach” childcare facility (the German name of the cartoon character Karlsson on the Roof), which is situated on the roof of a shopping centre in Berlin-Spandau. Polytan worked in close collaboration with the landscaping architects Schirmer-Partner and the company Rumpf to plan and implement the project. The results of this cooperation are more than spectacular.

Within just four weeks, the team laid around 450 square metres of soft-impact surfaces in differing shapes and thicknesses high in the air on the roof of the Spandau Arcades. A special feature and, at the same time, a particular challenge with this order was the undulating playing surface, which had to be applied on top of a specially prepared foundation. Children can use this to practise their sense of balance and have fun at the same time, for instance. The play equipment blends seamlessly into this undulating landscape. Together with a range of plants, the child-friendly Polytan synthetic turf provides a touch of greenery for the rooftop playground.

The centre’s 90 children can now run around outside to their heart’s content. The Polytan soft-impact coverings are of course HIC-tested and provide reliable protection against head injuries. Perhaps the character after whom it is named – Karlsson on the Roof – will come flying past the kindergarten!
